Zelle Hofmann Assists Environmental Groups in Efforts to End the Use of Sulfuryl Fluoride – EPA Grants Petition
January 12, 2011Zelle Hofmann Special Counsel, Perry Wallace, represents environmental groups Fluoride Action Network, Environmental Working Group, and Beyond Pesticides on a pro bono basis in their efforts to end the use of sulfuryl fluoride, an insecticide and food fumigant. In 2004, these groups challenged the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) risk assessment citing concerns about the overexposure of children to fluoride which could damage teeth and bones, harm thyroid function, and increase risk of bone cancer. On January 10, 2011, The EPA granted all of the groups’ objections to the use of sulfuryl fluoride as a food fumigant. The EPA has indicated that it will now take steps to begin a phased-down withdrawal of sulfuryl fluoride.
